There are few things more frustrating than submitting a feed photo and discovering that your alerts aren’t blowing up Billie Eilish-style. Don’t want your college roommate’s engagement announcement to go viral? You are no longer required to do so. After testing the tool in small groups over the previous month, Instagram said on May 26 that the ability to hide likes on photographs in your feed will be rolled out to the general public.

“Starting today, we’re giving you the choice to hide like counts on all items in your feed,” the firm noted in a blog post. You’ll also be able to hide like numbers on your own postings so that others can’t see how many people like them. This way, if you prefer, you may concentrate on the photographs and videos being shared rather than the number of likes posts receive.”

“We explored hiding like numbers to see if it may depressurize people’s experience on buy instagram followers,” the post continued. People and experts told us that not seeing like counts was advantageous for some but frustrating for others,” which is why users may now choose what they like. According to the post, flexibility will be available on Facebook in the coming weeks.

How to Hide Instagram Likes

Go to Settings, click “Privacy,” and then tap the new “Posts” menu item to conceal likes on other people’s posts. You can choose to hide like counts on your own posts or turn off all like counts in your feed. Other people won’t be able to see the likes on your posts as a result of this. This feature may be turned on or off at any time, so if you change your mind, you can always turn off likes on a post that has already gone public.

By pressing the three dots in the upper right hand corner and selecting “Conceal Like Count,” you can hide likes on individual Instagram photos. You’ll now see “Liked by [one account] and others” instead of a number for the like count. You can tap that to see the total number of likes and who liked it. On first glance, other people who see the photo will see the total number of people who loved it.

Why Would I Want To Hide Instagram Likes in the First Place?

When Instagram mistakenly hid likes as part of a testing glitch in March 2021, not everyone was pleased, according to Input. According to TechCrunch, many influencers rely on fast access to Instagram like counts — both for themselves and for others — to find out what’s popular. It’s also wonderful to see when a photo you judged feed-worthy gets the attention you hoped for, just as it’s annoying when a photo doesn’t immediately surface up in your alerts.

Many people, however, believe that having the option to lessen compare-and-despair is worthwhile. “Removing visible ‘likes’ from the platform may very well reduce the potential harm that comes from social comparison and online performance meant to impress one’s peers,” Dr. Jennifer Dragonette, PsyD, Northern California executive director of the Newport Academy, a teen rehabilitation center, told Bustle when Instagram first teased the feature in 2019. “However, even in the absence of visible ‘likes,’ there are still difficulties regarding rapid satisfaction and pressure to appear a certain way that could lead to social media addiction.”
